It allows devices to find out things about each other in order to improve compatibility, communication and ease of use. MIDI-CI sets MIDI on a path of evolution. I reported on it after it was presented at the Audio Developer’s Conference last year. MPE is a method of using MIDI which enables multidimensional controllers to control multiple parameters of every note within MPE-compatiblesoftware. In many ways, Capability Inquiry is more interesting and revolutionary. The MIDI Association 183271 Hits One of the biggest recent developments in MIDI is MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE). While this doesn’t sound all that revolutionary, the end result grants the ability to get extremely versatile, feel-based reactions from your instrument, as it responds more. For this reason, MPE is seen as a more immersive, acoustic-like approach to MIDI. While MIDI-based, MPE allows musicians to edit data from each individual note and not just from a single channel. But this adoption means that this support will hopefully be more forthcoming. With the MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) standard, each note becomes its own channel, with distinct parameter options even when played simultaneously with other notes. MPE stands for MIDI Polyphonic Expression and is a new, standard protocol for electronic music production. It still requires both the software or hardware MIDI device and the controllers to support the protocol for it to work properly, and support within the DAW to enable comprehensive editing. MPE works by assigning each note its own MIDI channel – this is what makes it compatible with existing MIDI systems. The controllers tend to be velocity, pitch, aftertouch, slide (forwards/backwards) which is mappable and lift, or the release of a note. In the left hand browser select New Instrument. (macOS: Go to Studio One > Preferences > External Devices) and follow these steps: In the External Devices menu, click on the Add button. Consider pitch bend or moving the mod wheel – it affects all notes being played, whereas MPE treats each note independently. Section 1: Setup New Instrument To set up your Instrument, navigate to Studio One > Options > External Devices. They give you the power to apply expressional controller data to individual notes being played together, where previously they would be applied globally. This the functionality found in ROLI Seaboard controllers and the Linnstrument amongst other emerging devices. ![]() ![]() It used to be called Multidimensional Polyphony Expression, but has now been smartened up as MIDI Polyphonic Expression, which makes a lot more sense.
